About the Artist

Heilong Wang graduated from the Department of Decorative Arts at Nanjing University of the Arts in 1984, where he received instruction from notable mentors such as Liu Haisu, Zhang Daoyi, Lin Shuzhong, Jiang Hongwei, and Zhu Xinjian. This marked the beginning of his artistic journey. Subsequently, he taught at a university for eight years and has been engaged in spatial design for nearly three decades. His significant and influential works can be found across various regions in China and Hong Kong, which have granted him prestigious awards, including the American IDA, Singapore SIDA, London OPAL, APIDA, and the Chinese Jintang Award, among others. His experiences outside the realm of art have broadened his perspective, providing him with a wealth of knowledge in spatial design, materials, and composition. In recent years, the profound societal changes have deepened his understanding of human nature and the human condition, prompting his return to artistic practice.

Heilong's approach to painting does not adhere to specific themes or forms. It is often sparked by a particular catalyst or factor, such as an accidental encounter with an image, a classic scene, or even the stimulation of visual texture. He does not conform to the traditional approach of predetermined themes or the prevailing concepts of the present. Instead, he believes in the mysterious arrangements of fate. He endeavors to let the creative process itself guide him in discovering and revealing latent imagery, allowing room for spontaneous guidance.

Heilong appreciates the simplicity of pictorial structures, direct and emotional expressions, and multi-layered forms of communication. Due to his past experiences, he has a natural affinity for various types of paper, ranging from Chinese handmade paper to Korean paper and even newsprint. In fact, he finds appeal in the specific texture and aroma of printed materials. Such elements are often manifest in his works.

Despite being situated within the context of contemporary art and having experienced the political, authoritative, and commercial pressures that come with it, he has consistently been captivated by the intrinsic spirit of Chinese culture. Subconsciously, he always seeks to express this fascination within his artwork, hoping to reflect the impact and transformation that Chinese culture has undergone in the modern era.
